Investment in Golf Facilities at Castlereagh Hills and Aberdelghy Golf Courses
Two exciting new golf practice areas have now opened at Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s two municipal golf courses. The investment programme has seen the launch of a four bay driving range at Aberdelghy Golf Course and two indoor golf studios at Castlereagh Hills Golf Course.
The practice areas use the latest golfing technology to complement both popular 18-hole courses. The golf studio operates using Trackman software, which is loaded with the latest golf data and simulation equipment. Golfers can virtually choose to play over 300 of the world’s greatest golf courses to challenge their skills against the top flite PGA players. Young golfers can also enjoy a range of animated games, making the facility the perfect venue for a family activity.
The driving range at Aberdelghy provides an easy option for members and guests to practice their golf swing during inclement weather. The sheltered area will offer a schedule of lessons as well as groups sessions for schools and corporate bookings.
Councillor Thomas Beckett, Chair of the LCCC’s Communities and Wellbeing Committee said, “The opening of these two practice areas is an important addition to both golf courses as they provide an option for customers to play golf all-year round. This means members and visitors can participate in the sport regardless of wet weather conditions, which will further enhance their golfing experience.
“There is also the benefit of extending our highly successful lessons programme by tailoring sessions within a dedicated practice area. This will open up the possibilities for golfers to increase their skills and confidence before heading out on the course. It is also hoped that that the facilities will inspire new golfers to take up the sport and increase participation in physical activity and wellbeing across the council area.
“I look forward to welcoming golfers to both practice areas and seeing the benefits of the new facilities on their game.”
Further details on the indoor golf studio, please visit https://www.castlereaghhills.com/indoor-golf-studio/. Details on the new driving range are available at https://www.aberdelghygolfcourse.co.uk/driving-range/

Castlereagh Hills Golf Course recently played host to the 2021 Golf Ireland Ulster under 19 Girls Inter-Club Tournament. The match play competition was a qualifying event to represent Ulster in the prestigious All-Ireland Finals.
A total of 16 junior teams competed over two days with Royal Portrush taking victory over Royal County Down in an intense final.
Speaking at the final, Councillor Sharon Skillen, Chair of the Leisure & Community Development Committee said: “It has been a pleasure to welcome so many clubs over the last number of days to Castlereagh Hills Golf Course.
“I would like to commend all of the clubs that participated in the competition for their commitment and dedication to their junior sections by offering young golfers the opportunity to fulfil their potential in the sport.”
“As we continue to emerge from recent lockdowns, golf plays a pivotal role in encouraging young people to get outdoors and get active and encourages a lifetime of physical activity. I hope all of the participants continue to be inspired to progress in the sport. I would like to wish Royal Portrush every success as they go on to represent Ulster in the upcoming All-Ireland Finals.”

A group of children have been learning to play golf as part of two unique summer golf camps taking place at both Castlereagh Hills Golf Course and Aberdelghy Golf Course.
The camps, which were aimed at children aged 5-14 years, provided an introduction to golf through a number of fun workshops on the course. The sessions were delivered by the Golf Professional team in conjunction with Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council.
Speaking at the event, Councillor Sharon Skillen, Chair of the Leisure & Community Development Committee said, “The summer golf camps provide a fantastic platform to bring children together to experience a sport, which many will be trying for the first time.
“Throughout the week, children had the opportunity to take part in series of workshops and challenges under the expert coaching of the Chris Jelly Golf team. It was also great to see first-hand, the children putting their new skills into practice, which you can tell by the smiles and laughter, how much the sessions were enjoyed by everyone who attended.
“I hope to see all the children back onto the course again either as a junior member or at a golf outing with their family. Who knows, we could see the future rise of the next Rory McIlroy!”

Please find below, guidance which applies to golf club activities in clubs situated in Northern Ireland under the NI Executives COVID Plan, which takes effect from 16 October at 6 pm.
We encourage golfers to arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before their pre-booked tee time, to play their game and depart the facility as soon as possible afterwards. Clubs are reminded that no social gatherings can take place at the club.
It is essential that all club officials and members familiarise themselves with this guidance, and play their part in ensuring our sport remains open and accessible at this uncertain time.
Following the NI Executives announcement in relation to increased restrictions due to COVID-19, golf clubs and golfers must continue to adhere to the following:
• Clubs may continue activities which are qualifying for handicapping purposes
• No social gatherings at the facility.
• Members, their guests, visitors and staff with colds or any symptoms of COVID-19 must stay away from the golf course/clubhouse.
• Physical distancing rules are observed by all members and their guests at all times in the car park, clubhouse and on the course.
• Tee times are booked in advance online or over the telephone.
• Daily timesheets are restricted to a minimum of 8, 9 or 10 minute intervals. Clubs may only choose one interval for each day. If clubs choose 8+ minute intervals, play is restricted to 2 golfers per start time. If clubs choose 9+ minutes, up to 3 golfers may play per start time. If clubs choose 10+ minutes, up to 4 golfers may play per start time.
• Those aged 70 years and over and the medically vulnerable should exercise judgement regarding the extent to which they engage with others and in activities outside home. Specific Government guidance will be provided.
• Clubhouse access should be confined to use of toilet facilities (provided they can be kept clean) and initial retrieval of golf equipment from lockers.
• Players are instructed not to touch the flag or flagstick.
• Rakes are removed from the course. Players are requested to smooth bunkers using their feet or a club.
• Hire Trolleys (electric and pull trolleys) must be sanitised prior to each use.
• The use of golf buggies is discouraged. Where a golf buggy must be used, it should be used by one person only (except where an individual has a disability/additional needs), and it cannot be exchanged between people during the round. Members of the same household may share a buggy and buggies must be sanitized thoroughly after each use.
• Caddies are not permitted (exception: where the group of golfers and the caddies are from the same household or an individual has a disability/additional needs).
Further guidance will be issued to clubs online as and when NI Executive government change these restrictions.
We await further guidance from the N Ireland Executive on the following matters:
Gatherings of no more than 15 people – Inside including that for Committee Meetings & Outdoor in relation to non-contact training
We will update clubs with this information as soon as it is available.
